Knot Tying Training Evolution

Equipment Needed for this Training Evolution:

  1. Line
  2. Stopwatch
Rules for this Training Evolution:
  1. Unit is divided into teams of three cadets
  2. Each team will tie the same five knots
  3. The first cadet will begin tying the required knot on the signal from the division officer. Time begins on signal from division officer.
  4. Time stops when the line is thrown to the ground.
Knots to be tied in this Training Evolution:
  1. Square Knot
  2. Single Becket Bend
  3. Bowline
  4. Round Turn with Two Half Hitches
  5. Clove Hitch
Scoring this Training Evolution:
  1. The two best times for each knot added together will constitute each teams score
  2. Any improperly tied knot will incur a 60-second penalty
  3. The team with the quickest time wins
  4. The League Cadet and Sea Cadet with the fastest time for all FIVE knots will be awarded the Division Knot Champion for this evolution.
NOTE: The purpose of a Bowline is to put a temporary eye in the end of a line; therefore Bowlines tied using both ends of the competition line will not be accepted.

Signal Flag Training Evolution

Equipment Needed for this Training Evolution:

  1. One Complete Flag Bag
  2. Stopwatch
Rules for this Training Evolution:
  1. Unit is divided into teams of two cadets. Each cadet must be able to send and receive.
  2. Each cadet will identify by PHONETIC ALPHABET
    1. Five Letter Flags
    2. Two Numeral Pennants
    3. One Special Pennant
  3. The Message signaled shall be provided by the Division Officer and shall consist of 5 letters, in groups of five, non conforming words, not repeating any letter of the alphabet in any group.
  4. The message must be sent in less than four minutes
  5. After the message has been sent and received, the competitors will switch roles.
Scoring this Training Evolution:
  1. The Highest possible score is 80 points
  2. One point shall be deducted for each missing or incorrect letter
  3. The team with the highest score wins and will receive the Division Signal Flag ID Champion award for this evolution.

Morse Code Training Evolution

Equipment Needed for this Training Evolution:

  1. Code Device -- Flashing light or Sound
  2. Stopwatch
Rules for this Training Evolution:
  1. Unit is divided into teams of two cadets. Each cadet must be able to send and receive.
  2. Each cadet will identify by PHONETIC ALPHABET
  3. The Message signaled shall be provided by the Division Officer and shall consist of 5 letters, in groups of five, non conforming words, not repeating any letter of the alphabet in any group.
  4. The cadet sending may indicate to the receiving cadet the number of the row or group being sent
  5. The message must be sent in less than four minutes
  6. After the message has been sent and received, the competitors will switch roles.
Scoring this Training Evolution:
  1. The Highest possible score is 50 points
  2. One point shall be deducted for each missing or incorrect letter
  3. The team with the highest score wins and will receive the Division Morse Code Champion award for this evolution.

Semaphore Signalling Training Evolution

Equipment Needed for this Training Evolution:

  1. Standard Signal Flags
  2. Stopwatch
Rules for this Training Evolution:
  1. Unit is divided into teams of two cadets. Each cadet must be able to send and receive.
  2. The two cadets must stand approximately 50 feet apart
  3. Each cadet will identify by PHONETIC ALPHABET
  4. The Message signaled shall be provided by the Division Officer and shall consist of 5 letters, in groups of five, non conforming words, not repeating any letter of the alphabet in any group.
  5. The cadet sending may indicate to the receiving cadet the number of the row or group being sent
  6. The message must be sent in less than four minutes
  7. After the message has been sent and received, the competitors will switch roles.
Scoring this Training Evolution:
  1. The Highest possible score is 50 points
  2. One point shall be deducted for each missing or incorrect letter
  3. The team with the highest score wins and will receive the Division Semaphore Champion award for this evolution.

Close Order Drill Training Evolution

Requirements for this Training Evolution:

  1. Drill Area 150 ft by 150 ft
  2. Drill Card
  3. 3 Judges
Rules for this Training Evolution:
  1. All Cadets in attendance must compete
  2. Every PO3 and above in the Unit must be able to act as Drill Leader
  3. Drill Leader will form up the unit on directions from the Judges, in rank formation
  4. Drill Leader will report to judges when ready to begin
  5. Unit must remain on the Drill Field (corners marked with blue masking tape)
  6. Unit must end at the same place on the drill field from which it began

  2. The unit score is the sum of all three judges scores
  3. The unit score will be decreased by 5 points for either a boundary violation or failure to end at the origination point.
  4. The Unit should perform this at their Annual Inspection for the Inspecting Officer.

Heaving Line Training Evolution

Equipment Needed for this Training Evolution:

  1. One Heaving Line -- Approximately 85 feet long with a one pound monkey's fist
  2. Two Pylons
  3. One 100 foot tape measure
  4. Marked Competition area that is 20 X 100 feet
  5. Foul Line Judge
  6. Distance Judge
Rules for this Training Evolution:
  1. Unit is divided into teams of three cadets
  2. Each cadet has two throws to qualify
Scoring this Training Evolution:
  1. The distance is marked where the monkey's fist strikes the ground, not the distance rolled after impact
  2. Cadets may use either of the two proper means of throwing, the line must pass through but not touch the pylons
  3. The cadet may not cross the foul line
  4. The two top individual throws on each team will constitute that teams score
  5. The team with the highest score (furthest throws) will win the team competition
  6. The cadet with the furthest throw wins and will receive the Division Heaving Champion award for this evolution.

Honor Guard Training Evolution

Requirements for this Training Evolution:

  1. Honor Guard Equipment
  2. 3 Judges
Rules for this Training Evolution:
  1. All Cadets in unit must compete
  2. Every E3 and above in the Unit must be able to act as Honor Guard Captain
  3. Honor Guard must follow the sequence of the Drill Card -- It is permissible for a designated cadet to read the drill card to the Honor Guard Captain, without penalty or contributing to the Teams Score.
  4. Drill must remain in the boundaries set by the judges (marked by blue masking tape)
  5. Drill must end at the same place on the drill field from which it began
  6. Judging will begin when Honor Guard Captain reports readiness to the judges
  7. Judging will end when Honor Guard Captain reports completion to the judges

Firefighting Training Evolution

Equipment Needed for this Training Evolution:

  1. One Safety Judge
  2. One Timekeeper
  3. Two 50 foot lengths of 1 1/2 inch hose
  4. One Navy All Purpose Nozzle (APN)
  5. One Hydrant Wrench
  6. One Stopwatch
  7. Competition Area approximately 30 feet X 150 feet
  8. One 4 foot by 3 foot sandwich board painted to indicate fire
Rules for this Training Evolution:
  1. Unit is divided into teams of four cadets
  2. On the signal from the TimeKeeper, the hose will be unrolled from the starting line and then coupled. The female end will be attached to the hydrant while the NAPN is attached to the male end of the hose
  3. One cadet will man the hydrant as the remaining three man the hose and nozzle
  4. When the hose and nozzle is manned by three cadets, all on the same side of the hose the hose will be charged. The NAPN will be opened to the solid stream position and the stream directed at the target.
  5. As soon as the target is knocked down, the NAPN will be closed and the water secured at the hydrant
  6. The Team will have two attempts and the best recorded time will constitute the team's score.
  7. The next team to compete will roll the hose in the accepted manner
Scoring this Training Evolution:
  1. Time starts upon the signal from the Timekeeper
  2. Time stops when the water stream knocks over the target
  3. A 15 second penalty will be levied for each observed safety violation listed below:
    1. Kinks in hose
    2. Leaks at any connection point
    3. Uncontrolled hose

Ribbon Identification Training Evolution

Equipment Needed for this Training Evolution:

  1. Individual Ribbons Printed on White Sheets of Paper
  2. Stopwatch
Rules for this Training Evolution:
  1. Unit is divided into teams of three cadets
  2. Each team will identify the same ribbons
  3. The first cadet will begin identifying the ribbons on the signal from the division officer. Time begins on signal from division officer.
  4. Time stops when the cadet is finished writing.
Ribbons to be identified in this Training Evolution:
  1. Honor Ribbon
  2. NSCC Meritorious Service Ribbon
  3. Unit Commendation Ribbon
  4. Academic Achievement Ribbon
  5. 25th Year Commissioning Ribbon
  6. Color Guard Ribbon
  7. Third Year Ribbon
Scoring this Training Evolution:
  1. The two best times for Ribbon Identification added together will constitute each teams score
  2. Any improperly identified ribbon will incur a 60-second penalty
  3. The team with the quickest time wins
  4. The League Cadet and Sea Cadet with the fastest time for all ribbons will be awarded the Division Ribbon ID Champion for this evolution.

Personal Inspection GIG Training Evolution

This training evolution is to teach each cadet the proper wear and care of the Uniform.

Equipment Needed for this Training Evolution:

  1. 4 Uniforms each with mistakes on them
  2. Stopwatch
  3. Clipboards and Pencils for each team
Rules for this Training Evolution:
  1. Unit is divided into teams of three cadets
  2. Each team will examine the same 4 uniforms
  3. The first cadet will begin checking over the uniform completely upon the signal from the division officer. Time begins on signal from division officer.
  4. Time stops when the cadet drops his clipboard.
Gigs to be identified on Uniform One in this Training Evolution:
  1. Yellow T-Shirt
  2. Yellow piping
  3. Ribbons incorrectly displayed
  4. No ID Card
Gigs to be identified on Uniform Two in this Training Evolution:
  1. Improperly Tied Neckerchief
  2. Dirty Inside Collar of Shirt
  3. Flashes improperly sewn on (loose)
  4. Name Plate and ribbons displayed on wrong side of uniform
Gigs to be identified on Uniform Three in this Training Evolution:
  1. Shoes not shined properly
  2. Discolored Hat
  3. Pants pressed with center seam
  4. Incorrect pressing of Flap pleats
Gigs to be identified on Uniform Four in this Training Evolution:
  1. Unpolished/scratched belt buckle
  2. Irish Pennants
  3. Missing HR Dickson Division Patch
  4. Expired ID Card
Scoring this Training Evolution:
  1. The two best times for each team added together will constitute each teams score
  2. Any improperly miss identified problem will incur a 60-second penalty
  3. The team with the quickest time wins
  4. The League Cadet and Sea Cadet with the fastest time identifying all mistakes for all FOUR Uniforms will be awarded the Division Inspector award for this evolution.
NOTE: The purpose of a Bowline is to put a temporary eye in the end of a line; therefore Bowlines tied using both ends of the competition line will not be accepted.

Land Navigation Training Evolution

The Commanding Officer will provide specific guidance on what he requires in the development of a land navigation course. It depends upon the divisions training mission, training plan, and tasks to be trained. These are basic guidelines to use when setting up a course.

The Division Officer determines the standards for the course. Recommended standards are as follows:

Equipment Needed for this Training Evolution:

  1. Marked Course throughout Reserve Center
  2. Stopwatch
Rules for this Training Evolution:
  1. Unit is divided into teams of three cadets
  2. Each team will follow the same course
  3. The first cadet will begin going thru the required course on the signal from the division officer. Time begins on signal from division officer.
  4. Time stops when the cadet exits the course.
  5. Distance between points: no less than 50 meters; no more than 150 meters.
  6. Total distance of lanes: no less than 450 meters; no more than 1,350 meters.
  7. Total number of position stakes: no less than 3 for each lane; no more than 5 for each lane.
  8. Time allowed: no less than 7 minutes; no more than 15 minutes.
  9. Decide on the Terrain. The unit should use terrain that is similar to terrain they will be using in tactical exercises, but, terrain should be different each time training is conducted.
  10. If this training is conducted with the Marines or Army Reserves then the areas they design will fulfill this training evolution requirement.
  11. The Division Officer will perform a Map and Ground Reconnaissance of the area. Checking the terrain to determine position stake locations, to look for hazards, and to develop training briefings.
  12. The Division Officer fabricate or order position stakes and will plot the locations of the position stakes on a 1:50,000-scale map.
  13. The Division Officer will place the position stakes in the surveyed locations.
  14. The Division Officer will certify the course by having another staff member negotiate each lane of the course.
  15. The Division Officer will complete a risk assessment of the training area.
  16. The Division Officer will prepare course requirement sheets and print them.
  17. The Division Officer will give the training briefing Alpha period and the execution of this training will be completed during Bravo and Charlie periods.
Scoring this Training Evolution:
  1. The two best times for each cadet team added together will constitute each teams score
  2. Any missed position stake will incur a 60-second penalty
  3. The team with the quickest time wins
  4. The League Cadet and Sea Cadet with the fastest time for the evolution will be awarded the Division Land Navigation Champion award for this evolution.
